Hairy Beanstalk performance cafe
By Freya Pinney
WOLLONGONG — If you're into poetry reading with a pot of tea, drama sketches with a smoothie or even acoustic blues with some apple pie, then the Hairy Beanstalk Performance Cafe is for you. Open once a month at the Wollongong Youth Centre, Hairy Beanstalk is run by young people for young people.
Decked out in second-hand '60s and '70s decor, the Hairy Beanstalk was created by four young women and draws on the young people involved in a range of Wollongong Youth Centre programs.
"The cooking classes will contribute a proportion of the food to sell, art students will create the cafe letterhead, logos, T-shirts, prints and the Hairy Beanstalk sculpture. The theatre group (Black Sheep Youth Theatre) can perform at the cafe, and the sound technician course can supply the cafe with experienced youth to do the sound at concerts and performances," youth worker Michael Mittwollen told Green Left.
The variety of performances include poetry readings, short skits, local acoustic musicians and more. Hairy Beanstalk is certainly an enjoyable experience and not to be missed. All the food and drinks are affordable — nothing over $3 — and the music and performances are superb. The cafe opens once a month. For more information or if you're interested in performing, contact the Youth Centre on 26 5969.
