Candidate urges support for Mt Isa

By Jim McIlroy

BRISBANE — Zanny Begg, the Democratic Socialist candidate for the seat of Brisbane Central in the upcoming state elections, has urged continuing solidarity with the Mt Isa workers.

In a statement released on May 21, Begg said: "The determined struggle of the Mt Isa miners deserves our continuing support, whatever the immediate course of the campaign.

"By taking on MIM and demanding basic union rights, wages and conditions, the Mt Isa workers are standing up for all unionists in this country.

"Any attempt to sacrifice the interests of the Mt Isa miners on the altar of Labor Party electoral needs should be condemned by all working people.

"The Democratic Socialist campaign pledges itself to support the Mt Isa workers in whatever way we can as their struggle continues.

"Moreover, we pledge our support for real wage rises, improved working conditions and measures such as a large-scale public works program to create new jobs."

Anyone interested in assisting the campaign, or finding out more about it, can write to: Democratic Socialist Campaign, 29 Terrace Street, New Farm 4005, or phone (07)254 0565.
