Calendars aid Cuban children
By Joan Coxsedge
Last October I launched a 1995 calendar featuring seven of my Cuban drawings as a fundraiser for the children of Cuba.
I am immensely pleased to announce that, with the help of Australia-Cuba Friendship Society branches around Australia and networks of comrades and friends, the calendars have been tremendously successful and made a handsome profit.
After printing, postage and sundry other expenses, they have made a little over $5000. I was able to send off a cheque for that amount with the Southern Cross Work Brigade, whose members recently returned home after spending some weeks in that fascinating Caribbean island.
Our support for Cuba is now more important than ever. Last November the Republicans took control of both houses of the US Congress. It is claimed the leadership is politically to the right of Ronald Reagan! One of their first acts was to reinstate the Senate Select Committee on Terrorism. But instead of looking for links with the now defunct Soviet Union, they will be looking for connections with the few remaining progressive countries and movements around the world. I have no doubt that Cuba and its supporters will be high on their hit list.
