FREMANTLE — The Democratic Socialist Party is launching its new branch here on June 28, and as DSP member Michael Bramwell puts it, "The party is very excited about the possibilities of interesting more people in socialist politics".
The DSP plans to play an active role in organising the fight back against the government's neo-liberal cuts affecting the area — in particular the restructuring of the Maritime Workers Union — and in building solidarity with East Timor and Cuba. Also a priority, according to Bramwell, will be the promotion and distribution of Green Left Weekly.
The DSP intends also to raise awareness about socialist politics. Fremantle has a strong socialist history, with the Communist Party of Australia practically running the town earlier in this century.
The launch of the new branch will be held at the new DSP office at 32 Suffolk St, Fremantle, 7pm on June 28. There will be toasts from different organisations followed by live music. Everyone is welcome.
