The Sorcerer's Apprentice — More than 30 years after the first French nuclear tests in the Sahara, the French army still denies that soldiers or scientists were contaminated. A Swiss team pieces together the circumstances of these first tests and meets military and civilian witnesses now suffering from radiation-induced diseases. In May 1962, a bomb detonated before it had reached the bottom of its shaft. The mountain cracked and a cloud of radioactive particles spewed over the surrounding area — including army personnel, two French ministers and the local nomadic people. The media were never told, and to this day the French government denies this disaster ever happened. SBS, Thursday, August 14, 8.30pm.
