Fighting racism, attacks on union rights, sexism, environmental destruction — the Howard government's offensive against working people and the poor — is our "mandate" for 1997. We are committed to building the fight back this year.
To help do this, we have launched a campaign to recruit 500 new subscribers to the paper. Subscribing makes you a part of the fight back network, in Australia and around the world.
Our correspondent in France, Sam Wainright, will report on the struggles of the French workers as they drive back their government's neo-liberal offensive. The militants in Indonesia, grouped in the People's Democratic Party (PRD), have been asked to contribute a regular column on the developments there. We will continue to report on the campaigns of the Philippines labour movement and on US politics in "Letter from the US".
On the Australian front, we will report and encourage any resistance that erupts against the Howard offensive. We will campaign for solidarity with all those fighting back — on all fronts — in the unions, in the social movements, in the local communities, on campuses and high schools.
GLW will be synonymous with solidarity with those dissenting, resisting and fighting the system.
If you want to help build the fight back, become a Green Left Weekly supporter. You can use the clip-off on page 7, or ring the subscription hotline (free call), 1800 634 206.
A special appeal
Activists will be campaigning hard in the next few weeks to help us achieve this target. But they can't do it on their own. We also need your help, to persuade and convince others of the need to subscribe. Help us recruit new subscribers to the paper. We are counting on you!
