Activists to discuss nuclear issues

By Trish Corcoran

MELBOURNE — Friends of the Earth (FoE) will be hosting a "Nuclear Free Australia" forum here on December 5 and 6. The forum has been called to bring together organisations and activists to strengthen and broaden the national anti-nuclear movement and decide on a common strategy to prevent the expansion of the nuclear industry in Australia.

FoE believes the movement needs to discuss its strategy in the face of the increased push for an expansion of the nuclear industry since the re-election of the Howard government.

The three areas of potential expansion are: uranium mining and exploration; a national radioactive waste dump; and the proposed construction of a replacement reactor at Lucas Heights.

The key issues to be discussed by the forum will be: cooperation between indigenous and non-indigenous people; opposition to the expansion of uranium mining, both existing and proposed mines; technical aspects of uranium mining; the campaign against the proposed reactor at Lucas Heights and the proposed nuclear waste dump in Billa Kalina; the economics of uranium mining; international liaison and action; and the political background.

Organisations have been invited report on their involvement and contribution to the campaigns, and their ideas for the future direction of the movement. Phone 9419 8700 for more details.
