Casual workers to strike
By Chris Slee
MELBOURNE — Contract workers at the Victorian state government's Land Titles Office, members of the Australian Services Union (ASU), are planning to strike on November 14 and 15. The workers are campaigning for a federal award, which would mean a pay rise.
This is a fight for casual and temporary contract staff everywhere, who are being denied access to the basic federal award rights that most workers take for granted. Victory would reduce employers' incentive to use labour hire agencies and make a dent in the anti-worker laws passed by the former Liberal state government.
Contract workers will be speaking at a public meeting on November 18, 7.30pm, the Function Room, RMIT, Swanston Street. The meeting, titled "The Fight for Real Jobs", will also hear from an ASU activist from the Land Titles Office and a National Union of Workers delegate from a market research call centre which has recently been unionised.
