Message to Marxism 2000 from John Pilger

I am very sorry and disappointed I can't attend such an important and exciting conference.

We have cause for optimism. A little over a year ago, who would have thought Suharto would be history, and that East Timor would have shaken off its invaders? Terrible things happened, but the action, solidarity, determination and courage of the people forced change and laid the ground for a radical shift of power back to the people. Considering the sheer size of the enemy, that is a wonderful achievement, and should be celebrated today.

There are difficult times ahead as the enemy takes off its military uniform and puts on its business suit, and we must all be alert to new, insidious dangers. But as long as the will of the people is strong, nothing can stop the recurring phenomenon of radical change. I send you my warm wishes and solidarity.
