Yanner wins job back

ABORIGINAL ACTIVIST Murandoo Yanner has been reinstated as coordinator of the Carpentaria Land Council (CLC).

The board of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission on February 22 overturned a ruling last month by ATSIC's Mount Isa office that Yanner had to give up the CLC position because he had been convicted for assault after a pub brawl in Burketown in 1997.

On December 10, the Queensland Court of Appeal upheld the state attorney-general's politically motivated appeal against a more lenient sentence and ordered that Yanner serve 18 months' jail, suspended for four years. The outrageous sentence was the basis upon which Yanner had been removed from the CLC.
