SYDNEY - One-hundred and eighty people packed into Casa D’Italia in Leichhardt on November 24 to celebrate Green Left Weekly and raise funds to support it. Enjoying the delicate flavours of Middle Eastern food, attendees were entertained by local band 11-piece jazz/funk group, Exploding Happiness.

Green Left Weekly was toasted by Democratic Socialist Party member Max Lane, who stood for the Socialist Alliance in the seat of Lowe in the federal elections. Lane described the growing threat of racism and xenophobia in Australia, pointing out that this would continue while First World governments tried to justify their “war on the people of the Third World”.

“Imagine what the last few months would have been like without Green Left Weekly”, Lane asked the audience. “Who else is always on the streets denouncing the government’s racist refugee policies, and the war? What would it have been like without that anti-racist voice?”. He then urged participants to further support GLW, by donating money or helping with its distribution.
