Global justice activists make plans for M1

BY DARREN JIGGINS

HOBART — Global justice activists in the Hobart M1 Alliance have decided to organise a blockade of the Forestry Tasmania building on May 1, followed at 12 noon by a march to the Department of Immigration, Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs.

The M1 Alliance plans to build these actions around the slogans “Stop the clear-felling of all old growth forests!”, “Free the refugees!” and “Stop the racist war!”

With only 13% of Tasmanian old-growth forests remaining, the M1 Alliance believes a morning blockade of Forestry Tasmania would provide a powerful expression of anti-corporate mass action.

M1 Alliance members have already publicised the planned blockade at a March 26 community meeting on the forestry issue organised by the Republic Bar, which was attended by 120 people.

The M1 Alliance has planned a variety of speakouts and media stunts to get the word out about the May Day actions. To get involved, phone Darren on (03) 6234 6397 or Rin on (03) 6272 8808. M1 Alliance meetings are held at 7pm every Thursday at the Republic Bar's Green Room, 299 Elizabeth Street, North Hobart.
