CANBERRA — Members First, the rank-and-file network in the Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU), has nominated Andrew Hall as a candidate to be the union's national president. An election for the position will be held in November.

The Members First team won up to 33.4% of the vote in the May election for CPSU national officers.

Union activists have held initial discussions about how to build a democratic and activist culture within the CPSU. They have also discussed how to win a single public service-wide agreement, opposition to job cuts (up to 10% in some departments) and outsourcing, and how to best defend vital community services such as Medicare and public education.

Members First meetings will be held in Canberra on October 7 and in Melbourne on October 13. For more information email Terry Costello in Victoria at <TCostello@primustel.com.au> or Andrew Hall in the ACT at <membersfirst@bigpond.com>. Visit <http://www.users.bigpond.com/membersfirst>.
