HOBART — Fifty people protested against Prime Minister John Howard as he attended a business function on August 26. The protest was organised by the Greens, the Socialist Alliance and the Tasmanian Gay and Lesbian Rights Group. Howard was labelled a "war criminal" who "should be locked up for his crimes" while refugees should be released from detention.

Helen Burnett, the Greens' candidate for the federal seat of Denison, addressed the protesters, as did Socialist Alliance candidate Kamala Emanuel, environmentalist Neil Cremasco and gay rights activist Michael Dempsey.
