FRANCE: Workers celebrate victory

May 10, 2006
Issue

On May Day, 30,000 people rallied in Paris and thousands more took to the streets in other cities across France to celebrate the victory against the CPE (First Employment Contract). The law, which would have allowed employers to sack young workers within their first two years of employment without giving a reason, was defeated after a concerted two-month-long battle waged by students and workers. The May 1 rallies also called for another anti-worker law, the CNE (New Employment Contract), to be repealed.
