BRISBANE — Acting on information received the night before, a small group of anti-war kayakers headed off to Luggage Point at Pinkenba early on January 27 to 'see off' the visiting USS Ronald Reagan. The kayakers were stopped by police, who surrounded their vehicle and refused to let them leave the car park at Luggage Point on the grounds that the exclusion zone surrounding the warship had been extended from 100 metres to include the whole area during departure. Their water protest plans stymied, the activists established a vigil on the shore, where they were joined by supporters. After the ship's departure, and so as not to leave the kayaks unused, the activists did 'peace fleet' training in preparation for the next warship visit.
