On August 17, the Movement Towards Socialism (MAS) rejected new US allegations about Cuban and Venezuelan involvement in unrest in Bolivia. MAS deputy Antonio Peredo denied US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld's claims that he had evidence that Cuba and Venezuela had encouraged the social unrest that forced the resignations of presidents Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada in 2003 and Carlos Mesa in June. Peredo told Prensa Latina on August 17 that the US government should demand more efficiency from its agents in Bolivia in order to get accurate information about the nationwide, grassroots nature of social protests in the country.
