Thank you very much for your support for the Socialist Alliance's 2007 federal election campaign.
Your support made it possible for the Socialist Alliance to stand candidates in the Senate in five states (Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia), as well as in 17 House of Representatives seats.
That meant that the socialist message was heard by hundreds of thousands — a big plus for the only real alternative to unjust and lethal corporate capitalism and the parties that do its bidding.
While our vote remained modest (8782 in the House of Representatives and 7752 in the Senate), these votes for the Socialist Alliance in Senate and lower house seats had triple value. First, it showed support for the sort of polices we urgently need. Secondly, it directed preferences to the Greens and thirdly, if these preferences were not used by the Greens, they helped Labor beat the Liberals.
Our election campaign also helped the alliance in its ongoing work: helping build all the movements in favour of workers' rights, social justice, civil and democratic liberties and a liveable environment that will be needed as much under the incoming Rudd Labor government as they were under the hateful Howard government.
If you are not already a member, let me also urge you to join and become active in the Socialist Alliance. The more people we have, the better impact we can make. Socialist Alliance joiners receive a free introductory three-week subscription to Green Left Weekly.
