IDAHO: the Exhibition aims to raise the awareness of homophobia by inviting people who have experienced homophobia to create artworks that explore their experiences of and relationship with homophobia.
Gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (GLBTIQ) artists will be invited to take part in an exhibition which will be run in the lead up to the annual International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO) on May 17. The exhibition will be launched on May 16.
An invitation will also be extended to the general GLBTIQ community via local community media and by contacting community groups. The aim is to encourage participation from a wide range of community members. There will also be workshops leading up the launch of the exhibition, encouraging and supporting community members that have experienced homophobia, and giving them an opportunity to express themselves.
IDAHO: the Exhibition will allow each individual artist the freedom to express themselves on this topic. Artists may work in any medium as long as the artwork is able to be sold.
Ten boxed mounts will be provided to some participants (one mount each) for them to frame selected art works. This will allow emerging or "new" artists from within GLBTIQ communities the chance to express themselves without the expense of framing their work. Works on paper which are not selected to be framed will go into a special display.
Homophobia exists because of fear and a lack of understanding. IDAHO: the Exhibition will endeavor to create awareness to help dispel this fear and open avenues of discussion, and empower understanding.
All artworks in the exhibition will be inspired by the reality of homophobia. Participating artists will be free to explore homophobia in any medium.
Each artist will submit one art work for the exhibition approximately 1 metre square or smaller for the gallery wall.
Artists may also submit a "work on paper" (one entry per artist) to be mounted within white boxed mounts.
All artworks in the exhibition will be for sale. There will be no entry fee, nor awards.
