NEWCASTLE — The NSW ALP and property developers are yet again pushing to cut the Newcastle train line, this time proposing rail services end at Wickham and be replaced by buses.
An "urban renewal" report by the Hunter Development Corporation advocates cutting the line at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars. The report does not once mention peak oil or climate change.
Previous attempts to cut the line have been thwarted by vocal community campaigns led by the Save Our Rail group. The grassroots campaign group will now crank up again. Save Our Rail brings together socialists, Greens, Labor left, Progressive Labor Party and community rail activists.
