In a new development for progressive media, Green Left Weekly has launched GreenLeftTV, an online video resource to complement GLW's newspaper and website. It aims to provide another avenue for radical pro-people and pro-planet news and analysis.
GreenLeftTV seeks to build up and improve on the video presence that GLW has already begun ― especially as the number of people accessing news and analysis via videos on the web rises.
GreenLeftTV is only two weeks old, but you can already view several videos from the Easter refugee rights protests at Darwin detention centre; a piece on Adelaide's environment march for survival; footage from the Nyoongar Aboriginal Tent Embassy in Perth; and a Sydney deaths in custody and NT intervention protest.
Ideas for future GreenLeftTV projects include panel discussions and debate on key political issues involving guest speakers; opinion pieces; adbusting to turn corporate advertising on its head; and more analytical videos.
GLW wants to hear what readers would like to see on GreenLeftTV.
As with the newspaper, GLW supporters from around the country will be the eyes and ears (and camera-people and editors) of GreenLeftTV. GLW is being supported in the project by the Sydney-based Art Resistance, which has skills and experience in producing quality videos, and are training up activists to help GreenLeftTV.
This "activist film skills" training will be given to interested GLW supporters across the country, including at national conferences in which GLW is involved.
Mainstream TV throws up a non-stop diet of (un)reality shows, refugee- and unemployed-bashing “current affairs” and “infomercials” for news, so there is a real need for progressive, radical, alternative TV.
GLW doesn't have the multi-millions needed to access a TV station nor a commercial station's resources, yet it does have the means to create, edit and stream quality progressive material on the web.
Despite having minuscule resources, Green Left Weekly has proved to be a thorn in the mainstream media's side for more than 21 years and more than matches it with the corporate rags.
The long-term challenge for GreenLeftTV is to also become a thorn in the side of the media of the 1%, and to develop and amplify the voice of the 99% in winning a world that puts people and planet before profits.
