May Day marches around Australia

This weekend unionists around Australia will march to celebrate the achievements of working people. While May 1 is the traditional day to remember the struggle of workers to form unions and fight for a better life, in Australia the marches and parades usually occur on the first weekend of May.

This year, a range of socialist and activist groups will be marching together in joint contingents across Australia behind banners saying, “It's time for a fightback”.

On Saturday, May 4 marches will be held in the following cities:

Bundaberg
10.30am assemble at Riverside Parklands, Quay St, Bundaberg.
11am March commences, proceeding down Quay St to Memorial Park for a family fun day.

Gold Coast
1pm Family Fun Day at Southport Broadwater Parklands.
5pm assemble at Marine Parade, Southport.

Ipswich
9.30am assemble at Syntax Street, Ipswich for 10am march start.
Later Family Fun Day, Blair State School Cribb Street, Sadliers Crossing

Toowoomba
10am Flag Raising at Village Green, Ruthven Street
10.30am march assembly cnr Herries and Victoria Sts for 11am march start.
Finishes with Family Fun Day at Toowoomba Bowls Club, Victoria St.

Newcastle
May Day Dinner: Friday May 3 at Newcastle Panthers.
10am assemble at Hamilton Station carpark for a 10.30 march start.

Wollongong
Toast: Friday May 3 at 6.30pm, Hellenic Club, Princes Hwy Figtree $20/$25.
10am assemble at Lowden Square Wollongong for a 10.30 march start.

Adelaide
10.30am assemble Hindmarsh Square, cnr Grenfell and Putney Sts.
March to the Torrens Parade Ground where there will be food stalls, BBQs, speakers and refreshments.

On Sunday, May 5 marches will be held in the following cities.

Brisbane
9.30am assemble cnr Wharf and Turbot Streets, Brisbane, for 10am march start.
10.30am Family Fun Day at RNA showgrounds.

Cairns
9.45am march assembly at Cairns Esplanade (opposite Cairns Base Hospital).
10.30am Family Fun Day, Cairns Esplanade.

Mackay
10am assemble cnr River and Gregory Streets for 10.30am march to Queens Park.
11am Family Fun Day at Queens Park.

Rockhampton
8.30am assemble at Riverside Carpark, Archer Street for 9am march start.
9.30am Family Fun Day at Victoria Park, children’s playground area, Huish Drive.

Townsville
10am assemble at Anzac Memorial Park, The Strand for 10.30am march start.
Finishes with a Family Fun Day at Strand Park.

Melbourne
1pm assemble Victorian Trades Hall, cnr Victoria and Russell Sts Carlton.

Sydney
11.30am assemble Hyde Park for 12pm march start.
Finish at Belmore Park near Central Station.

Perth
12pm assemble Fremantle Esplanade. The march begins on Marine Parade, and then travels along Norfolk Street, South Terrace and High Street.
1pm when the march returns to the Esplanade a festival of live entertainment, DJs and plenty of family festival fun.

On Monday, May 6 marches will be held in the Northern Territory.

Darwin
3.30pm assemble at 38 Woods Street for 4pm march start.
5pm concert at Bicentennial Park on the Esplanade with music, food and licensed bar.
