About a dozen neo-Nazis stormed the Moreland Council meeting on September 27 following the council's decision at their last meeting not to celebrate Australia Day on January 26.

Councillor Sue Bolton, a member of Socialist Alliance, told Green Left Weekly she "didn't feel threatened" by the protesters, who "looked like buffoons", but that their actions indicate how provocative and confident they have become.

"I didn't feel threatened because they accosted me in a public place, at the council meeting. But what if they had cornered someone when they were alone on the street at night? They are trying to stoke the flames of hatred.

"These far-right groups are only able to thrive because of the racist policies of the Australian government, particularly ministers like Peter Dutton.

"The government’s policies and those of the far right are becoming more indistinguishable every day.”

Members of the public gallery chanted "Always was, always will be Aboriginal land" at the protesters.
