July 19 will mark 7 years of detention for those refugees who were sent to detention centres on Manus Island and Nauru. At the time, former prime minister Kevin Rudd announced people arriving by boat to seek asylum would be processed offshore and never be allowed to resettle in Australia.
Despite the harm and trauma caused by this policy, the Scott Morrison government has no plan to end detention. Instead, it is focused on getting powers to seize the phones from people in detention to silence protest and hide the abuses that occur in these facilities.
It is time to end the crime of indefinite detention, free the refugees and bring those still on Manus Island and Naura to Australia now.
