The family of Tane Chatfield said that they did not accept a coroner’s finding on August 26 that he died of self-inflicted injuries.
The Gamilaraay, Gumbaynggirr and Wakka Wakka man was found hanging in his cell in Tamworth prison on September 20, 2017 after having served two years on remand without trial, and despite not having been charged.
Deputy State Coroner Harriet Grahame said that the 22 year old did not receive sustained psychological or other support inside the jail.
Outside the court, Noika Chatfield said she would continue to demand justice. “There’s too much injustice done to our people. As long as I’ve got breath in me I will not let my son’s death be in vain.”
