Climate activists from Drum Rebellion and Extinction Rebellion protested outside the Environment and Water Minister Tanya Plibersek’s office in Redfern on June 3, calling on the new Labor government to stop mirroring the former Coalition and declare a climate emergency.

Displaying a banner which said “End Fossil Fuels Now”, Drum Rebellion activists beat their drums to highlight the urgent need to act on climate change and environmental protection.

They delivered a letter which called on the new Labor government to: reconsider its support for fossil fuel projects in the Beetaloo Basin in the Northern Territory, Santos’ coal seam gas project in the Narrabri in New South Wales, Woodside Energy’s $16.5 billion Scarborough gas project in the Burrup Hub, Western Australia and more coal mines in the Galilee Basin in Queensland.

They also want the government to Tarkine Forest in Tasmania from ongoing mining and logging and to nominate it for a World Heritage listing, end logging in all native forests, strengthen the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Act, stop destroying kangaroos, conserve all koala habitat, increase national and marine parks and stop broad-scale land clearing.
