More than 1000 people, accompanied by their dogs, babies and grandmothers, joined hands around Preston Market on August 12 to send a message to the Victorian government to protect it from developers.

George Kanjere from the Save the Preston Market campaign group called on Labor not to turn the markets into a facsimile of Northland. He said real estate group Salta Properties and developer Medich Corporation want to demolish 80% of it for a car park and shopping mall.

He said Labor must stand by the northern suburbs communities and acquire the site to ensure the future of the market.

Preston Market is and has always been a special place to residents in the northern suburbs. Not only is it a fresh food hub, it is a valuable community space connecting locals to each other and the wider community.

Darebin Independent Councillor Gaetano Greco said the heritage protection on the market only happened because of the community campaign. He urged everyone to continue the fight.
