Latin Americans unite for May Day
By Lolo Madariaga
SYDNEY — Nine Latin American solidarity and community organisations collaborated in order to celebrate May Day within their own community.
More than 700 people gathered at Cabramatta Civic Hall on Saturday, May 4. Performances by community artists showed that our community is not just reproducing what has been done in our countries of origin, but creating new poems, songs, dances and music which reflects both our countries and our community.
Speeches emphasised the importance of the unity and cooperation of our organisations to improve solidarity activities and to represent our community.
A featured speaker was Nidia Díaz of the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front, who gave a broad overview of recent events in El Salvador. She also congratulated the organisers on the massive attendance at the celebration.
