At the coalface: Worker solidarity and just transition in the Hunter

Conferences & public forums
Online

When

7:00pm Monday 28 October

Where

Australia

Why

What can we learn from Norway’s 78% tax on fossil fuel exports? And what can we learn from Collie, a town in WA, that is currently in transition from 123 years as a coal town, towards a renewable energy led future by 2030?

Join Rising Tide for our second just transition webinar on Monday 28 October at 7-8.15pm AEDT.

RSVP here: https://www.risingtide.org.au/online-forum-at-the-coalface

SPEAKERS:
•Richard Denniss, Executive Director, The Australia Institute, will talk about the lessons from Norway’s 78% tax.
•Professor Roberta Ryan, University of Newcastle, Institute for Regional Futures, will talk about the lessons from Collie’s transition away from coal, towards a renewable energy future by 2030.
Our speakers will then join us for a Q&A session.
This event is open to all participants - Zoom link to be posted in this event.

This forum is framed around a discussion of Rising Tide’s second demand, which is: Tax fossil fuel export profits at 78% to fund community and industrial transition and pay for climate loss and damage.

Newcastle and the Hunter has been a key center of industry and unionism since colonization.
Rising Tide acknowledges that many of the democratic rights we enjoy today, including the right to protest, have been carved out and defended by the trade union movement.

We also acknowledge that in order to protect our community from the volatility of the coal export market, we need to ambitiously fund a transition plan that leaves no-one behind.

Program:
Up to 40 minutes of a panel discussion between the speakers answering the questions above.
At least 30 minutes of Q&A, and open space for Hunter rank-and-file members.
