Multimedia journalist and producer Michael Fox is back with a new podcast series, Stories of Resistance, which is packed with glimpses of inspiration in these dark times.
Each episode recounts a story of past or present-day struggles across the Americas — from workers' disputes and resisting dictatorship, to indigenous and environmental organising, and more.
Running at about 4 minutes long, Fox told Green Left that each episode is a sound-immersive journey, enriched with music and rich ambient sound.
“Think of them like Eduardo Galeano-inspired vignettes for a Trump 2.0 world.” Fox said.
“These are dark times. People are looking for inspiration. I hope these stories can offer a little hope amid the darkness.”
The first episode dropped on January 20 — the day of Donald Trump’s inauguration — and will ramp up to three episodes a week in March.
Stories so far have included Chilean musician Victor Jara’s defiant stance against dictatorship, how indigenous peoples in Brazil fought off COVID-19, the struggle of Mayan warriors to defend their land, and the life of an underground printing press that stood up to the Argentine junta in the 1970s.
The stories are largely culled from Fox’s own interviews, research and reporting in the region throughout the past 20 years. During that time he has reported extensively for PRI’s The World, DW, The Nation, Business Insider, Sierra Magazine, The Intercept, AJ+, TRT World, The Real News and other outlets.
Stories of Resistance follows on the heels of Fox’s Under the Shadow podcast series, which documented devastating and revolutionary moments in Latin American history. Fox also produced Brazil on Fire, a look at Brazil’s turn toward fascism under President Jair Bolsonaro and how the US helped push it along.
Stories of Resistance is being co-produced by The Real News and Global Exchange, but requires help. That is why Fox has initiated a Kickstarter to help raise funds and hopefully be able “to offer inspiration in these concerning times”.
