Bougainville anniversary

Despite the heavy presence of Papua New Guinea Defence force soldiers, the people of Bougainville held celebrations to mark the third anniversary of the island's declaration of independence from PNG on May 17.

Radio Free Bougainville said people turned out in their hundreds to celebrate in many parts of central and south Bougainville. At one gathering in central Bougainville, 4000 people celebrated with feasting and traditional dancing.

In a speech to mark the day, president of the Republic of Bougainville Francis Ona urged all Bougainvilleans to forget their past differences and unite against PNG in defending their land and right to self-

determination.

Radio Free Bougainville reported on May 24 that in south Bougainville, members of the government "resistance force", a pro-PNG vigilante group, have been deserting to join the ranks of the Bougainville Revolutionary Army.
