Help for FMLN

By Paul Ingwersen

The Canberra-based Committee to Defend Human Rights in El Salvador is coordinating an effort to send material to assist the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN) in its election campaign.

We are collecting megaphones, paper, two-way radios, materials for screen printing and, most importantly, money.

Under terms of the agreement signed 18 months ago, free elections are to be held in March 1994.

The FMLN, after leading the military struggle against the US-supported government, is now a registered political party and turning its mind to implementing its economic plan in the areas it controls as well as focusing on winning the elections.

While the cease-fire has been relatively successful, the government has ignored public opinion and United Nations pressure and continues to evade full compliance with the peace agreements.

The traditional parties are off and running, with their party machines flush with funds.

It is vital that the FMLN and other progressive forces be in a strong position for the elections. Any donations can be forwarded to CDHRES, PO Box 1212, Belconnen 2616. For more information contact Bernardo Zamora on (06) 258 8845.
