ISRAEL: Knesset cancels debate on Vanunu

Issue

On March 14, several international experts arrived in Israel to address a meeting of the Knesset's Constitution, Law and Judiciary Committee, scheduled on March 15 to discuss the restrictions imposed on nuclear whistleblower Mordechai Vanunu. They found, however, that the hearing had been cancelled. Vanunu was released from jail in April last year, after serving 18 years in jail for leaking information about Israel's nuclear weapons program to a British newspaper. Since his release, he has been forbidden from leaving the country, which he wants to do, or speaking to media. The restrictions are due for review next month.
