Neither God nor evolution

"The truly humanitarian system is not the Marxism espoused by Western intellectuals but the only system that can establish, as it historically has, the furtherance of life on Earth: capitalism." — From a commentary by Andrew Bernstein, a senior writer for the US right-wing Ayn Rand Institute, on Cybercast News Service web site, July 9.

Humanitarian system

"Almost half the world's population, or three billion people, live on two dollars (euros) a day or less and the gap between the world's richest and poorest has doubled in 40 years, the International Labour Organisation said Sunday." — Agence France Presse report, July 6.

Dismal science

"The chief arbiter of the nation's business cycles [the US National Bureau of Economic Research] said Thursday that the most recent recession ended in November 2001 — even though more than 1 million private-sector jobs have been lost since then, driving the unemployment rate up, not down." — Los Angeles Times, July 17.

Difficult job

"The employment and unemployment numbers made our job very difficult", US National Bureau of Economic Research member and Harvard University economist Jeffrey Frankel, quoted in July 17 LA Times.

Freudian slip

"[Israel's] security is the essential roadblock to achieving the road map to peace." — Emperor George Bush II, July. 25.

Justice, Dubya style

"Of course, it's important that the, that Saddam's sons were brought to justice." — Emperor Bush, July 30, commenting on the US military's summary execution of Saddam Hussein's sons Uday and Qusay on July 22.
