NOWSA at Nepean
By Cass Pomroy
Between June 28 and July 4, the annual NOWSA (Network of Women Students in Australia) conference will be held at the University of Western Sydney's Nepean campus.
The theme for this year's conferences is "That was then, this is NOWSA — building, bridging, activating".
The history of the women's movement, the role of NOWSA, feminism, attacks on women's rights and the way forward will all be discussed.
This year, a major theme is building alliances with other oppressed groups. Hence the conference will be built both on and off campus in order to get a wider community participation.
Discussion on racism, the state of the education systems, working women, the environment and community outreach projects also will be part of the conference.
Many small and regional campuses within NSW have already been visited by the NOWSA tour.
Susan Page, one of NOWSA's conveners, says that the response has been positive. "We've had a lot of young women wanting to have input into the conference. This is great, as one of the aims of the NOWSA committee is to try to develop the network separate from the conference."
