A rally at Sydney Town Hall square on October 10 demanded the release of Abdullah Ocalan, “the Nelson Mandela of Kurdistan”, who has been imprisoned by the Turkish state since 1999.

It was addressed by former Greens Senator Lee Rhiannon, Reverend Bill Crews, Sudanese democracy activist Maysoon Elnigoumi, Coral Wynter from Socialist Alliance, Alison Buckley from the Kurdish Lobby Australia and Ismet Tashtan, Mira and Havin from the Kurdish community.

“There are so many oppressed peoples in this world and there are so few Nelson Mandelas and Abdullah Ocalans,” said Crews. “They are as precious as the stars in the heavens.”
