Russian coal miners call strike

An national strike has been called for November 5 by the Russian miners' union ROSUGLEPROF. At issue is the growing wage debt owed to Russia's miners. Already massive, the debt has soared by 89% since January. Russian miners are owed between three and six months' pay. Wage arrears now total some 2.056 billion roubles.

The desperate plight of miners and their families has already sparked a series of work stoppages across the Russian federation. ROSUGLEPROF says industrial action will continue until the wage backlog is settled.
