On Wednesday August 23 at 5pm the Perth community will gather for a peaceful vigil as fossil fuel company Woodside starts trying to construct a massive new gas field off the Pilbara coast.
The dangerous practice of seismic blasting can deafen whales - and a deaf whale is a dead whale.
Yet Woodside plans to do this for up to 80 days to assess gas reserves for its Burrup Hub, which if it goes ahead will be Australia’s dirtiest fossil fuel project.
The fact that Woodside is putting the lives of whales at risk just for a fossil fuel proposal where both the gas and most of the profit will be sent overseas, is horrifying.
As Western Australians, we have nothing to gain from the Burrup Hub going ahead.
The community event will be led by Greenpeace Australia Pacific and the Conservation Council of Western Australia (CCWA).
It will bring together concerned people from across the community for a somber candlelit vigil outside Woodside’s headquarters to show that Perth is opposed to Woodside’s destruction of our oceans and climate.
Wear black, bring a candle.
We need your help to stop Woodside, so come join us!
Details
Please meet at 4.45pm at Florence Hummerston Reserve, Corner of St Georges Terrace & Mount St, Perth WA 6000.
Gather here, grab a candle if you don't have one and then at 5pm we will all walk over to stand outside Woodside’s HQ at 11 Mount Street (approx 50m away).
Please note, if we block the footpath we may be asked to move on. Please listen to crowd marshals who will be wearing hi-vis jackets. Also note for accessibility reasons, unfortunately there is no seating, and we can’t block the footpath by sitting there. There are benches in the park on St Georges Terrace if needed.
Event will be finished by 6.15pm.
Remember to sign the petition to Stop Woodside and join the campaign working together for action on climate.
