Tamil refugees are holding a protest vigil outside the office of Richard Marles MP for Corio and Deputy Prime Minister.
They and their supporters will maintain their vigil for 5 days, between 8am and 6pm. They hope to raise awareness of their plight and want to speak with Marles.
About 50 Tamil refugees have been waiting for 12 years for permanent visas. They have been left in limbo, many without Medicare or work rights.
Harini Rathnakumar, a spokeswoman for Refugee Women Action For Visa Equality told Green Left: “It is unfair and people are suffering. The Labor Party said it was unfair, and now in government we want them to fix the problem and give people certainty.”
Supporters have been asked to call in and show their solidarity.
