WOLLONGONG— Fifty people, many from the local Aboriginal community, turned out to a public meeting called "Break the nuclear chain" on April 22.
After a welcome to country from Uncle Dootch Kennedy from the Illawarra Aboriginal Land Council, the meeting heard moving reports from Muckaty traditional owners, including Diane Stokes and Mark Lane, who are fighting a radioactive waste dump on their land in the Northern Territory.
The meeting discussed the many dangers of the nuclear industry, from waste disposal and mining to proliferation of atomic weapons. But the focus was on land rights and the need for solidarity with Aboriginal communities.
