Last week was momentous for Green Left Weekly. For the next six weeks, passers-by and visitors to the Green Left production centre in Abercrombie Street in Sydney will encounter scaffolding, building supplies, paint tins and general hubbub as work proceeds on the long overdue building repairs.
Two years ago, Green Left launched a special $65,000 building fund appeal, asking supporters for help to fix up the dilapidated building in which the paper has been produced since it began in February 1991.
So far, thanks to the commitment and generosity of Green Left supporters, just over $33,000 has been raised — enough to get started on the most urgent repairs. The long battle to keep leaks in the ceiling from drenching the computers, panes of glass from falling out of window frames and bricks from dropping out of walls is coming to an end.
With $32,000 still to raise, but just six weeks before the final bill arrives, we hope that those of you who have not yet got around to sending in a donation will do so now. At this stage, every contribution, however small, will help get us over the line and be greatly appreciated.
On behalf of all those who need and value their weekly dose of green and left news, views and analysis, our thanks to those many readers who have contributed to the fund and so helped guarantee the continued production of an indispensable challenge to the lies and distortions of the commercial media.
Donations can be sent to Green Left Weekly Building Fund, PO Box 394, Broadway NSW 2007.
