Film launches PRD solidarity campaign
A spectacular new documentary on the underground opposition to the Suharto dictatorship in Indonesia will be shown at federal Parliament House on March 18. The screening, organised by Senator Margaret Reynolds and sympathetic MPs, will launch a campaign to build solidarity with the People's Democratic Party (PRD).
The film, Only One Word: RESIST!, contains interviews with leaders of the PRD, footage smuggled out of prisons, and comments by supporters of Megawati Sukarnoputri and prominent figures such as novelist Pramoedya Ananta Toer. It also includes dramatic footage of protest actions. The film was made in secret by a community television director from Australia.
While in Canberra for the screening, PRD international representative Nico Warouw will ask MPs, government officials and non-government organisations to pressure the government to end military ties with the Suharto dictatorship.
In coming weeks, Warouw will speak at public meetings in Canberra, Sydney, Darwin and Melbourne. Only One Word: RESIST! will be screened around Australia beginning on March 21. See pages 29-31 for details.
