@box text intr = Dear friends, we are writing this letter to you in response to the request from the Socialist Party of Timor (PST) for financial assistance in the upcoming elections for the constituent assembly in East Timor.
The elections represent a very important opportunity for the PST. They are clearly the main — in fact the only identifiable — organised left party in East Timor. From all reports the PST is continuing to consolidate its support base across East Timor, opening up new offices and joining many new members.
This is despite enormous organisational and logistical problems enforced upon them, largely as a result of the devastation wrought by the Indonesian military and the militia gangs two years ago. Unlike most of their political rivals, the PST has benefited very little from the aid and NGO money that is doing the rounds in East Timor.
Through their general secretary, Avelino da Silva, the PST comrades have in the last month made a number of appeals for funds from the Australian left to help with the election campaign. They have projected a modest budget of around $5000 to run the most basic of election campaigns.
We ask readers of Green Left Weekly to assist the PST in taking advantage of this significant opportunity for socialists in the elections in East Timor. A contribution from you to the PST's election work will make a significant impact on how successful the PST will be in the elections.
We hope that you can give this matter serious consideration. Any contribution, large or small, can make a significant difference in the impoverished conditions of East Timor. Due to the urgency of the situation, the PST needs a response quickly.
Donations can be deposited directly in the Timor Solidarity Aid Fund bank account: Commonwealth Bank Account No: 2498 1001 4977, Broadway, NSW, Australia.
