In the first week of our emergency appeal we have received $10,845!
A very special thank you to Jim Mc, Maree R, Kylie M, Jane B and Simon B who joined the "$1000 Club" — supporters who make donations of $1000 or more. Jane sent $2000. If another 90 supporters of Green Left Weekly join the $1000 Club we will meet the entire appeal target!
Is that too crazy to hope for? Perhaps not with this sort of appreciation expressed in a letter with a $50 donation from a workers organisation in the Philippines: "We can't afford much but would like to make a $50 donation to the Green Left Weekly emergency appeal. This is on behalf of Bukluran ng Manggagawang Pilipino (BMP) and the paper Obrero. There is no way that we can sit back and allow a political project such as Green Left Weekly to go under."
Other donations were from: Jon L ($595); Tim G & Sue B ($500); Jonathan S ($50); Ben T ($15); Michael H ($50); Robert H ($100); Hugh T-B ($30); Alan H ($46); Steven W ($20); Simon D ($20); Stephen B ($100); Tomas B ($50); Ruth R ($200); Gene R ($50); Tom D ($10); and miscellaneous contributors ($58).
In addition, fundraising events raised $1191 in Sydney; $1610 in Melbourne and $100 in Darwin.
Many readers have written in with suggestions and questions. These will be taken up in this column over the next few issues. One suggestion from Rod is to "hold a Live 8-style concert on the steps of Sydney Town Hall".
"I could put together a good team of bongo drum players and would be prepared to go nude if need be."
Keep those suggestions coming in to <peterb@greenleft.org.au>.
