The housing crisis is the worst in living memory. It is a humanitarian disaster. At least 750,000 people live in housing stress and are in desperate need of secure housing.
Increasing numbers of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, elderly women and the working poor are among the fast-growing total of the homeless. The rate of homelessness has almost doubled since the 2021 Census.
Strong negotiating with the federal government over its Housing Australia plan has delivered extra money for social homes. But social housing is not public housing—and we need housing now, not in five years.
Over thirty years, large quantities of public housing have been handed over to ‘social’ or ‘community’ housing, with privatisation of publicly-owned homes and land. This must stop! We need funding for public housing.
Take action for housing justice on Saturday December 9. Defend and Extend Public Housing, and Freeze Rents.
