On 28 October, the Israeli Knesset voted to ban the operations of United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) from Palestine and to deem UNRWA a "terror organisation".
Since 1949, UNRWA has played a crucial role in delivering humanitarian assistance to Palestinian refugees across Gaza, the West Bank and the region, providing essential services such as food, education, healthcare, and emergency support. With Gaza’s two million population facing high levels of food shortages, UNRWA's humanitarian relief has been an essential lifeline.
UNRWA has long been a target for Israel, symbolising Palestinians' refugee status and Israel's denial of their right of return to the villages from which they have been exiled. Over the past 12 months, attacks on UNRWA staff and services have intensified. At least 233 UNRWA staff have been killed and two-thirds of the agency's facilities in Gaza damaged or destroyed. UNRWA operated schools and hospitals, which Palestinians have been using as a place of refuge, have been the targets of devastating bombardment.
Nowhere are UNRWA's services more desperately needed than the north of Gaza, which has been subjected by Israel to a blockade for the past four weeks. Famine looms. The denial of this essential lifeline will be a death sentence for tens of thousands more Palestinians in Gaza, adding to a death toll that already exceeds 43,000 (officially - likely many more).
We demand that the Australian government act now by imposing comprehensive military, diplomatic and trade sanctions on Israel.
