Solidarity with East Timor

November 5, 1997
Issue

This and next weekend, thousands of people in Australia will show their solidarity with the people of East Timor by marching to commemorate the anniversary of the Dili massacre.

The events of November 12, 1991 were far from the only atrocities committed against the people of that tiny nation, but it was the first time that the Indonesian regime's brutality toward the East Timorese had been caught on film and shown to the outside world.

Green Left Weekly has always been committed to freedom for the East Timorese, and for the other victims of Suharto's regime, including the people of West Papua and Aceh.

The struggle for democracy within Indonesia, too, has been covered in more detail by Green Left Weekly than by any other news source in Australia, and perhaps internationally.

While the establishment media champion the "special" relationship between the Australian and Indonesian governments, they say little about the human rights abuses and abject poverty that are an established part of life for the millions under Suharto's rule.

Green Left is not afraid to speak out and present the information that is essential for building the movements for freedom and democracy in the region, but we need your help to keep getting the word out.

To keep our progressive presses rolling we need financial assistance. If you are one of the thousands who rely on Green Left Weekly to keep informed about the politics of the region, then please consider donating to the Green Left Weekly Fighting Fund. Every dollar raised helps weaken the lies and distortions of the rich and powerful, and strengthens the struggles for justice. Green Left Weekly — it's your paper.
