Women's liberation discussed in Wollongong

By Nicole Hilder

WOLLONGONG — On November 6, Green Left Weekly held a women's liberation forum titled "It's Time to Get Angry Again".

Dr Margaret Perrott from the Democratic Socialist Party outlined the economic and social origins of women's oppression and gave a detailed description of the nature of the oppression.

Amie Hamilton from Resistance argued against the idea that we are living in a "post-feminist" era. Hamilton explained the various tendencies in feminism today, many of which, she said, were generated by disagreements about the source of women's oppression.

Feminist videos were shown afterwards, one of which highlighted the role of women activists in campaigns against pollution. The film Jane, about women maintaining an illegal abortion service in the US during the 1970s, was also screened.

Women's liberation activists in the Illawarra will hold their first meeting on December 8 to plan the International Women's Day 2000 march and rally. All women are welcome. Phone 4226 2010 for more information.
