Hands off Glebe and Action for Public Housing organised a rally for public housing on May 19 to protest the New South Wales government’s plans to evict more than 100 people from the Franklyn-Bay streets complex, demolish buildings and sell the land to private developers to build 14-storey high complexes in Glebe.
Speakers called for a massive investment into public housing to ensure everyone has a safe and secure home.
More than 50,000 people are on a wait list for public housing, but there are likely many more who could be eligible.
A report by Community Housing Industry Association NSW found that households could be waiting for up to 10 years. The government has reportedly sold off $3 billion worth of social housing during the last decade, amounting to 4205 social housing properties across NSW.
