The US Air Force has proposed a space weapons program, according to the May 18 New York Times. Air Force officials claimed that they are not seeking the militarisation of space. According to Air Force spokesperson Major Karen Finn, "The focus is on having free access in space". However, billions of dollars have already been spent developing space weapons and preparing for their deployment. According to the New York Times, General Lord explained to an Air Force conference in September: "Space superiority is not our birthright, but it is our destiny. Space superiority is our day-to-day mission. Space supremacy is our vision for the future."
